The hard drive consists of sectors wherein a fixed amount of data is stored. The process of creating new files, deleting, and expanding existing files, may cause fragmentations and performance loss. Keeping your hard drive defragmented can make the hard drive read/write operations faster.
There are several methods of Running Disk Defragmentation. You may follow each of the methods below.
Method 1:  Click Start | Run | then type dfrg.msc |click OK
Method 2:  Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter
Method 3: Click Start | on Start Search or Search programs and files type Disk Defragmenter
Choose the drive that you would like to defrag. You will notice that there is an option to schedule automatic defragmentation. It is highly recommended to turn it on to maintain good performance of your PC.
Initially, Disk Defragmentation will analyze the selected drive and notify you about its recommendation, whether it needs to be defragmented or not.
To summarize, what Disk Defragmentation does is move the files in the hard drive so that there are no empty sectors between them. This will make the drive’s magnetic head access files faster instead of jumping from one sector to another, which can cause some lag. Maintaining your computer speed and performance is not limited to running virus scans and freeing space in your hard drive. To achieve its maximum level of speed, you have to make sure that hard drive can easily access files by doing a regular disk defragmentation.
